Welcome!

Dear Visitors,

Welcome to the Early Modern Rape Project. This site has grown out of my own research on “The Reformation of Rape:  The Foundations of Rape Culture in Early Modern Europe.” The primary purpose of the site is to build a working bibliography and repository of articles, books, and resources on the subject of rape in the Early Modern World.  To this end, I invite you to submit additional bibliographical suggestions in the comments section.  In this way, I hope the project will continue to grow and serve the needs of scholars working on this subject in a variety of disciplines, geographies, chronologies, and contexts.

The existing bibliography contains citations of a great deal of the existing literature on rape in Early Modern Europe, especially western Europe, prepared by Devon Sherwood.  You may note that Devon and I have interpreted “Early Modern” quite broadly, and the citations include works on Medieval Europe and extend into what many consider the “Modern Period.”  We also recognize that “Early Modern” is a term primarily used to periodize Western European historiography, and it may not be a helpful term for those working outside of that region. Please feel free to ignore it.

Best wishes,
Greta Kroeker, Associate Professor of History, University of Waterloo

Devon Sherwood, Research Assistant, Graduate Student, University of Guelph
